Eyewear Styling Material Recommendations by Wendy Buchanan, Perceptions Eyewear.
Would you like to be an Eyewear Stylist? Advising on eyewear selection is more than just analyzing face shapes. Eyewear styling is also about scale and visual weight to create harmony and truly “AccessorEYEZ” your client with a style that flatters their face and complements their clothing style.
Helping your clients with eyewear styling includes advising on eyewear material by taking into consideration personal texture, bone structure and body type.
1. Personal Texture
The degree of texture and sheen in your clients’ hair and complexion indicates the ideal degree of texture and sheen for selection of material in eyewear.
If your client has curly hair and freckles this will give the illusion of texture. To create harmony select:
a. Eyewear in a textured metal material.
b. Layers of colour in a plastic material.
c. Natural wood or cotton materials.
If your client has a smooth hairstyle and clear complexion, this will give the illusion of sheen or shine. To create harmony, select eyewear in:
a. A smooth finish metal material.
b. Shiny plastic material.
c. Designs with glitzy details.
2. Facial Bone Structure
Analyzing your clients’ physical characteristics and visually assessing if they have fine, medium or strong facial features will help to determine the choice of material in eyewear styling.
Fine Features: Create harmony by selecting eyewear in materials that are fine, thin, flat and lightweight.
Medium Features: Create harmony by selecting eyewear in materials that are medium thickness and strength.
Strong Features: Create harmony by selecting eyewear in materials that are strong, thick, chunky and heavy weight.
3. Body Type
Often when selecting new eyewear, clients will only look at their face in a small mirror. In eyewear styling it is important to take a step back with your client and look at the entire person in a full-length mirror. Determining your clients body type or somatotype will also help to recommend eyewear materials. The 3 Somatotypes are ectomorph, mesomorph and endomorph.
Ectomorph will have a straight, angular, narrow body type. This body type will likely have angles in their face shape too. Select eyewear with straight lines and angles.
Mesomorph will have an average proportioned body type. This body type will likely have a balanced Oval or Hexagon face shape. Select eyewear with classic oval, cat eye or soft rectangle shapes avoiding extreme trendy fashions.
Endomorph will have curved, rounded or fuller body type. This body type will likely have curves in their face shape. Select eyewear styles that are curved, rounded and soft.
Focusing (pun intended) on the details and having the knowledge to communicate to your clients why a frame is better suited for them gives you credibility and helps you find the perfect frame for them.
