Self-Concept Change Formula

Self-Concept Change Formula

Here is a 3-step self-concept change formula that you can use to improve anything. Doing even just one step can be transformational.

1. Visualize

Thoughts are frequencies, which means they create. Have a clear mental picture of the self-concept you want. How would you act, think, and feel? The non-conscious mind cannot tell the difference between what is real and what is imagined. It accepts the images you feed it as real, and they are stored as memories. To get a clear picture, use creative visualization in a relaxed state. Many audio sources are available to help you do this. Visualization is a powerful tool for change!

“The mind is everything. What you think you become.” ~ Buddah

2. Affirm

Words have more energy than thoughts. Written words have more energy than spoken words. In developing affirmations for change, follow these three simple criteria:

  • Use the personal “I”. Imagine what it would be like to already have what you want.
  • Use positive language. Say what you want, not what you don’t want.
  • Be present-tense. Speak as if your affirmation is true. “I want” runs a pattern in your non-conscious mind to be in a state of want. “I will” pushes it into a future, which does not allow it to be now. “I am” are powerful words, and it can seem as if the universe conspires to give us whatever comes after these words.

“Repetition of the same chant, the same incantations, the same affirmations leads to belief, and once that belief becomes a deep conviction, things begin to happen.” ~ Claude M. Bristol

Only say what you want to be true. Repeat your affirmations to yourself and out loud. Involve your physiology; feel as if what you are saying is true. Saying them in a mirror magnifies the impact.

When a limiting idea surfaces, instruct your mind to eliminate it, by saying a word such as “cancel” or “erase”. Then repeat the positive affirmation.

To refer to a behaviour that you wish to change, you could say “In the past I was…”. The past is even one moment ago, but you are instructing your non-conscious mind that it is no longer true.

Write the affirmations over and over until you can accept them as reality.

3. Act

Actions have the most energy. Assume the role. “Fake it ’till you make it” is a way to create change. In the beginning it might feel unusual, but after awhile you will no longer be acting. You are creating a new pattern of behaviour.

“First say to yourself what you would be; and then do what you have to do.” ~ Epictetus
